A Therapist with a difference!
Prior to becoming a counsellor & Psychotherapist my degree in accountancy and economics led me into corporate finance and banking where I spent a number of years leading teams of people, involving a high degree of coaching and personal development.
I became aware that not one person is the same and that life events or personal issues can have powerful impacts, preventing people from leading productive and fulfilled lives. Experience of team leading enabled me to develop a real interest in the aspirations and struggles of individuals and convinced me to devote myself more fully to helping people overcome life issues and personal challenges.
I left banking and spent 4 years working as a mentor with children and young adults struggling with a variety of learning and behavioural difficulties, including those with autism. This led to my formal counselling training.
Although I work more with brief therapy, which aims to achieve maximum benefit for my clients with the lowest investment of therapy time, my Counselling Diploma has equipped me to use a range of therapeutic approaches and techniques in my professional practice according to the specific needs of my clients. It is my belief that my therapeutic relationship with clients is at the heart of counselling and also that an individual is separate from the problems that may be holding them back. Once this can be acknowledged and by working together, best hopes for the future can be established. Focusing on solutions, an individual can be encouraged to feel empowered to develop their own skills, strengths and resources in order to promote positive change.
My counselling experience covers a broad range of life issues and age ranges and I counsel both in the NHS and privately. In addition to counselling individuals, I have a special interest in relationship counselling and I actively work with couples, holding a postgraduate qualification in this area. As an experienced musician I can also integrate elements of music within my therapy work, where appropriate. I also have experience as a lead tutor on a Counselling Practitioners Diploma programme in a Further Education college setting and offer clinical supervision to both qualified and trainee counsellors.
I am an accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), which governs and informs my professional practice.
